Hair extension myths and misconceptions have caused confusion over the last decade and our expert team are here to bust these myths and let you know the real truth about hair extensions.

Will hair extensions damage my hair?

Let’s begin with our most common misconception, do hair extensions damage your hair? The answer is no. We stock a wide range of methods which are all kind to the hair and cause absolutely no damage, as long as the extensions are fitted by a qualified professional. It’s also important to ensure your extensions are properly cared for and maintained. This means using the correct aftercare and booking in for regular maintenance appointments with your hairdresser.

When purchasing our professional extensions, we always recommend searching for your nearest Beauty Works certified salon online in order to find a reputable technician for a fitting appointment.

Do hair extensions help your hair grow?

Yes, if they are fitted correctly by a trained professional. One great advantage of using extensions is the ability to add tones or colour to your hair without dying your natural locks.  Hair extensions can also act as a protectant from damage and give you the ability to style your hair in a variety of different ways.

You will of course still need to take good care of your extensions and natural hair; for example, regular washing and brushing, using a heat protectant and avoiding harmful chemicals. After washing your hair, we recommend using our 10-in-1 Miracle Spray before applying any heat. This will help to maintain, protect and restore the health of your natural hair and extensions in one simple spray.

Do hair extensions hurt?

Hair extensions should never hurt if they are applied correctly. Again, this highlights the importance of having extensions fit by a reputable and qualified professional. For example, if the hair is incorrectly applied and fitted too close to your root it may begin to put pressure on your scalp. If this is the case, we recommend booking another appointment to get the extensions re-fitted, and once corrected, you should no longer experience any discomfort.

I’m going on holiday, can I swim with hair extensions?

Just as you would your skin, your hair requires extra protection when on holiday or at the beach. Make sure to tie your hair up beforehand and avoid any direct contact with swimming pool or seawater and protect from sun-exposure. Here are some tips on how to protect your extensions whilst swimming;

Braid your hair

We always recommend braiding your hair and adding a small amount of After-Sun Conditioner Treatment before heading poolside as this prevents your hair extensions getting tangled and causing breakage.

Avoid Chlorine

To prevent discolouration to your hair, keep your hair out of the pool and avoid fully submerging your extensions whilst swimming, particularly with blonde shades. Chlorine also strips the hair’s natural lubricant, sebum, leaving your hair dry and brittle. We would advise always tying hair up or plaiting into braids, and also recommend using our After Sun Discoloration + Restore Shine Duo after swimming to hydrate and protect your hair.

Can I sleep in hair extensions?

Yes, you can! This is normal, especially with professional extensions. However, it’s important to prepare your hair before you go to bed. We recommend the following tips before going to sleep;

Plait your hair

After thoroughly brushing your hair extensions to remove any tangles and knots from the day, plaiting your hair before you go to sleep will prevent your hair extensions from moving around and causing the bonds to tangle. This will also reduce the amount of friction on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair as you move in your sleep, making the hair smoother and easier to brush in the morning.

Nourish your hair

Wearing a hair mask whilst you sleep can really benefit the health of your hair extensions. We recommend using our Pearl Nourishing Argan Oil Mask; this acts as a deep conditioning treatment designed to repair hair for both your natural hair and extensions. This creamy formula helps to moisturise strands and ensure they’re soft and shiny. Wash this off in the morning for perfect, silky hair.
