Celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin reveals how to master hair extensions like her A-List clients.

Just as you would mix up your make up look, extensions allow you to transform your tresses. Get Jen’s top tips on making hair extensions work for you.

“They’re a really amazing way of helping women get instant gratification.”

First time to hair extensions

Any extension newbies? Don’t be afraid to try clip-in extensions which can be easily applied in the comfort of your own home. “I see extensions as a styling tool” says Jen. “Sure you can get long-term options, but clip-ins and hair enhancers are less overwhelming, as you can take them in and out daily.”

Kendal Jenner is genetically gifted with lush locks, but she used clip-in extensions to enhance her own hair on the red carpet at Cannes.

Time for a change

Bored of your hair but don’t want to take the plunge? Hair extensions are the perfect option for road-testing a new style. “Sometimes I get people comment on my Instagram saying I bet she’s wearing extensions, I’m like YES, and you can too!”

“Extensions aren’t all about adding length, but extra body to shorter styles too.” Kylie Jenner loves to switch up her style with the help of extensions (and sometimes wigs), even when she’s sporting a blunt bob or cropped look.

Try tape in extensions for a semi-permanent effect which can be applied within an hour.

Cut, colour and blend

Hair extensions can be a game changer and if you get the colour and cut right, they’ll look like you’ve grown your hair yourself.

“The biggest mistake with extensions is not matching the colour correctly, because remember, quite often your root colour differs from the colour on your ends. It’s the shade on the ends which you need to colour match to.”

Our new hairpieces have hand-painted roots so once in your hair they blend really naturally with your own hair. They also have lowlights painted throughout which helps.

When it comes to the cut, Jen recommends that you “take your extensions to your stylist and ask them to custom cut the hair to suit your style, for example if you have you have layers around your face or a blunt cut.”

Gigi gets the extension game spot on, try the new root blend colour collection to get the look.

Care for your hair

Make sure you have a routine in place to look after your extensions. Clip them onto a trouser hanger in the shower to shampoo/condition them, as you would your own hair, and let them hang dry. Style them on the hanger too – it’s much easier.

Extensions that hold

And finally, if you’re using clip-in extensions or hair pieces, a top trick for making them last all night; use hairspray on the clips, not just the hair. “I use clip-ins for the majority of my clients, because they’re really easy” says Jen. “Just tease your hair at the roots where you want to place them, spray a little hairspray there and on the clips to help ensure a tight grip, and fasten them down into your hair.”
