Right in the thick of awards season, we’ve been treated to a host of incredible red carpet looks over the past few weeks. Last night was arguably the biggest night of the lot, with the A-list descending on Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre for the 90th Academy Awards.

In the wake of last year’s Weinstein scandal, which unveiled the ongoing sexism and sordid practices actresses in Hollywood face, it’s been a year where females in the industry have spoken out and made huge strides towards equality.  The stars were out in force in a range of dazzling gowns, seeing in the return of colour after the previous all-black movement in support of the #MeToo campaign. Here’s our top six looks of the night…

Jennifer Lawrence

J-Law stuns in this bronze Dior sequin dress, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, one of the only female creative leads of a major fashion house. This coupled with the gown’s symbolic glittering chainmail-esque panels, underlines the innate strength and resilience of women in the industry. This statement dress is perfect for Jennifer, showing that femininity is not to be shamed, particularly after facing backlash for her ‘revealing’ gown at last week’s Red Sparrow press call. She styled the dress with minimal jewellery, tousled curls and a red lip.

Zendaya Coleman

Looking a chiffon dream in this Giambattista Valli Haute Couture one-shouldered gown in chocolate brown, Zendaya brings effortless elegance. Reminiscent of one of Hercules’ muses, this Grecian-inspired piece is one of our favourites from the night. The regal draping train, teamed with a smoky eye and simple top-knot, makes The Greatest Showman actress stand out for all the right reasons.

Margot Robbie

The Aussie bombshell is literally dripping with glam in a white Chanel Haute Couture dress with a show-stopping train and glittering embroidery. On the same day that she was announced as an ambassador for the iconic fashion house, Robbie looks every inch the Hollywood starlet.

Lupita Nyong’o

The Black Panther actress wows in this custom gold Atelier Versace dress with thigh high split and embellished black detailing. The showstopping gown brings new meaning to the term”golden girl”, and Lupita shines in this stunning piece.

Viola Davis

Viola steal the show in this statement hot pink sequin Michael Kors gown and matching Roger Vivier clutch. We love how this vibrant colour pops – with the added brilliance of hoop earrings that crank up the sass even more.

Rita Moreno

An iconic nod to the bygone Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, Rita Moreno opts for the same custom-made dress she wore to the 1962 Oscars, where she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story. The black and gold, full-skirted gown is a timeless piece that looks just as fresh on the red carpet now as it did over half a century ago. Sometimes you just can’t go wrong with a classic!
